EDMONTON - Angie Elder owns a salon and spa that is organic and uses non-toxic products, so spending time Sunday helping clean up a small part of Edmonton's river valley seemed the natural thing to do.

Elder and several of her staff at Melange joined some 50 other ecominded folk in Edmonton's 350.org global work-party event. They spent hours picking up garbage in Victoria Park and collected about a dozen bags of litter, including everything from cigarette butts to blankets.

"We try to be sustainable as well and recycle everything we can in the shop. We thought this was a good way to get our name out there and give back to the community as well," Elder said.

The event was one of more than 7,500 350.orgactions taking place in 183 countries around the world, ranging from installing solar panels to planting trees to cleaning up garbage.

Taiger Harlton, the event's organizer, said the idea behind the day is to raise awareness about climate change through community-driven initiatives.

Green party candidate David Parker came out to help as a representative of his party. He said he personally supports any action that reduces climate change and carbon emissions.

Coun. Jane Batty also took some time out from campaigning to thank the event's participants.

"It's just one more wonderful way of Edmontonians doing their part to reduce climate change," she said.
